Niagara College Student Administrative Council is giving out free gift cards worth $10 to those filling out a survey on the topic of sustainability. The Office of Sustainability at Niagara College runs all of the environmental sustainability initiatives.

“We built some good learning opportunities for students and do our best to provide opportunities very beneficial from a skill building perspective,” says Amber-Lynn Schmucker, sustainability engagement officer.

“This is the first time we all are putting a sustainability plan together and we do want everyone’s input… whether that’s students, faculty, part-time or full-time employees,” says Schmucker.

“We want everyone to feel like their input is reflected in the plan that we have put together because then that allows for more ownership and then people can see that we are really listening to what they want to see for sustainability on campus.”

The gift cards, she says, are an incentive for people to take the survey. The gift cards can be used it at the Core, Shack and Armoury.

The goal of the Sustainability Office is to find out what people’s priorities are regarding sustainability on campus.

Ryan Huckla, president of NCSAC, says he believes the sustainability survey is a “great idea.”

“Sustainability is the direction that we should be moving in. We should be investing more when it comes to our technology… to put ourselves into a situation where we are creating less waste,” says Huckla.

The main objective for the team working on the surveys is to see what people want them to prioritize on campus, whether it is waste, renewable energy, social inclusion or diversity.

According to Schmucker this survey will be promoted by sustainability office staff until Dec. 22. It’s going to be live on the website Survey Monkey.

Schmucker’s said the goal was to get 500 responses to the survey, even though they already reach that goal, the survey is going to stay open until January.
