Last Friday, students showed off their moustaches for a good cause.

Second-year Digital Photography students worked together to help raise money for the annual Movember campaign at the Welland campus.

The students set up photography stations in The Core, the Learning Commons and the Applied Health building where students, with real or fake moustaches, could have their photos taken for awareness of men’s health. After, they could submit their name to win prizes.

The pictures were showcased at the college Monday and students could take them home at the end of the day. Students and staff were also encouraged to donate money or buy chocolate moustache suckers for $1. All funds raised during the event were donated to the Movember campaign.

April Stortz, 21, says she hopes after the event students will better understand Movember. “People don’t know why they’re growing moustaches.”

She says one main issue was finding volunteers to help run the event so close to exams, adding, if more people were able to help, more students would be aware of the event. She says the second-year Digital Photography students last year organized the campaign “To Write Love on Her Arms” and says she hopes to be just as successful.

Stephanie Rocheleau, 19, says, “I think it’s important to get people involved and have more fun activities because we’re not just all about going to school. It’s important to have fun, and plus it’s for a good cause.”

The second-year Digital Photography student says, “It’s going to be a challenge to get people to participate … because everybody’s so shy.”

Celine Garneau, 21, says, “It’s for a good cause, so I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to [participate]. I’m sure everyone knows someone out there that has gone through cancer, and it’s a good cause, so why not?”
