Forward and fifth-year Niagara student Kaitlyn McKenna, of St. Catharines, and second-year guard Matt Thomas, of Mississauga, of the Knights’ basketball teams were named Athletes of the Week for Feb. 7-13.

All-time leading scorer McKenna has a record of 956 points. She scored a total of 38 points in back-to-back away games last week.

Shawn McCart, Niagara College’s sports information officer, says she scored 21 points in a 61-54 loss to Windsor’s St. Clair College’s Saints on Feb. 11, while the previous night she “pumped in 17 points in the Knights’ 74-35 win at Redeemer College [in Ancaster].”

With her 956 career points, she moves into third place on the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) All-Time Scoring Leaders list, McCart says.

She passes Sara Maybee, who scored 949 while playing for Algonquin, of Ottawa, and Loyalist, of Belleville, Ont., between 2004 and 2009.

Enrolled in the International Business Management program at Niagara College, McKenna will have one more game to add to her total when she plays in her final regular season game tonight.

Thomas played a strong effort for the Knights in the 71-55 loss to St. Clair last Friday.

The 6’1” guard scored 19 points and “grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the seasons,” McCart says.

Thomas is in the Police Foundations program here.

The Knights will host the three-time defending OCAA champions and undefeated (12-0) Sheridan College Bruins, of North York, tonight.

The women’s team will play at 6 p.m., and the men’s team will play at 8 p.m. in the new athletic centre.
