Every day we wake up without fear of not eating our next meal. We take for granted the fact there will be food on the table. Imagine waking up hungry, though, without any idea of where your next meal will come.
This is a fear that many across the world face. It falls to caring people to take time out of their busy lives to change that.
People like Jamie Braniff, 22, of Welland. She organized a bake sale, asking for simple $1 donations to raise funds for World Hunger Relief 2012.
“It’s a good cause,” says Braniff, “so I really just want to throw everything I am into it.”
Braniff became involved in WHR, when she was asked at a local restaurant to donate.to the cause
“They only asked for a buck, so I figured I could do better,” says Braniff, with a laugh.
Determined to help, Braniff convinced friends and co-workers to have a bake sale in front of Giant Tiger, on Fitch Street in Welland.
“It was hard to actually find a place where we could have the bake sale,” says Braniff.
“I wanted to have it at the Farmers’ Market, but we needed a vendors’ permit. We also tried at the [Seaway] mall but we weren’t allowed there either. But I wouldn’t give up, I kept at it and eventually Giant Tiger let us have it in front of their store. I’m very thankful for them for that.”
In total, Braniff and her team raised about $1,125, which according to WHR would feed about 4,500 people. WHR statistics show that one dollar feeds four people.
However, Braniff could not do this alone. Lori Cope, 44, of Welland, was there to help every step of the way.
“I was so happy to take part,” says Cope.
“I have children, and the thought of them going to bed hungry, or anyone’s children for that matter, just breaks my heart.”
Cope also helped plan and organize the bake sale with Braniff, an experience she claims was “very exciting.”
“It was rewarding to see everyone come together and support the bake sale,” says Cope. “I just wish there was more we could have done.”
Barbra Seguin, 55, of Welland, helped bake assorted treats for the event. “The least we could do was take time out of our day and help,” says Seguin.
“All I asked was that anything we didn’t sell, we’d donate to local charities like the food bank, or Hope House.”
“There are so many people hungry everywhere, and they all need our help.”
