The Niagara News is the community newspaper of Niagara College located in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. It is created and produced by the students of the Niagara College Journalism program.
If you’re a Niagara College student or graduate who needs a job, the My Careers portal is the first place you should look.
A few of the features offered are regularly updated job postings, resumé samples, cover letter samples and field-specific resources.
Naasson Huyler, a Job Centre employee at the Welland campus, explains these features and how to navigate through the website.
By clicking Career Services and then Job Postings, you will see a list of various types of job positions available. You can filter the list by clicking on update search criteria, where you can select options such as position types, employment categories, location, days of the week and hourly rates.
When you click on a job position, you will find everything you need to know about the job, including a description and career requirements.
The college’s job centre reviews and posts all job advertisements.
If you need a resumé or cover letter to apply for a job, the site has field specific samples of resumés and cover letters. To find these, click on Job Search Resources then on Resumé/Cover Letter Samples, where you will see a list and click on a specific fields. The dedicated sample will pop up.
Last, if you click on Program Specific Website and then the field of your choice, a page will pop up of links and resources to help you with your job search further.
Pritpal Chana, a student in the Civil Engineering Technician program, uses the site to look for on campus jobs and volunteer opportunities. He estimates he uses it about 70 per cent of the time when searching for jobs and says the site is easy to navigate and use.
“This site is really helpful for students,” says Chana. “Everyone should use it.”
