With interests as diverse as teaching, textbooks and The Throwbacks, this professor plays as hard as he works.
Tom Keenan has not only taken on the teaching role, but also is writing and expanding the range of textbooks in his field,
The Niagara native, current resident of Fonthill and Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL campus) Psychology professor says he always wanted to write a textbook.
"My first mentor at Brock [University], John Benjafield [professor], had written a number of excellent books, and his example really inspired me," he said. "Eventually I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse."
An Introduction to Child Development, he says, is his first and only book, but he has also published over 30 journal articles on child development and book chapters in various edited collections over the years.
Teaching for almost six years, Keenan says he is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology at Brock University.
He got his PhD in 1995 from the University of Toronto, and his doctoral dissertation was on young children’s comprehension of sarcasm and irony.
Now in his "40-somethings," he says he has always been in the Niagara region except for a "nine-year teaching stint in Christchurch, New Zealand."
Keenan says he left a part-time job at Brock teaching developmental psychology to take a tenured position at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. He eventually made a tough decision to leave his well-earned position in New Zealand, but it was made easier by his daughter’s birth and his choice to raise her in Canada.
The co-author of the book, Subhadra Evans, was the first student Keenan mentored with her PhD. He says she is also pioneering a new area of health psychology and childhood. Her expertise, he says, really added to the second edition.
A website accompanies the second edition of the textbook, and there is a greater emphasis on research findings.
As well, a new chapter on moral development and a greatly expanded set of chapters in the biological foundations of development were included.
Response to the book, Kennan says, has been very good, and he was happy to find out the people who took over his work in New Zealand are still using his book.
As for future writings, Keenan says, "I’m actually discussing that over lunch next week with my editor. I may do another lifespan developmental psychology text specifically geared to the college market, as well as a third edition of the child development book. We’ll have to see."
Keenan is hoping for feedback from his students and is looking for ways to improve on a third edition.
"I’m really hoping to get some student research support from the college so I can train and then hire a student to do some archival research at Brock for these projects," he said. "For someone who’s perhaps going on to study psychology or education, this would be a brilliant opportunity."
In his spare time, Keenan says he and "a group of like-minded professors" get together weekly to jam music.
Known as The Throwbacks, the group has played a variety of college events, performing 70’s and 80’s pop, and they are now playing a few bars around Niagara.
