“I like to make people laugh.”
Many people enjoy doing many different things for many reasons, but David Green found his calling in comedy by wanting to make people laugh.
And you can laugh with the “PUNniest comedian in Canada” as he hosts comedy shows at the newly opened Showtime Comedy and Entertainment in downtown St. Catharines.
The 30-year-old Green fell in love with performing stand-up during his three-year return to England, where he lived until his family moved to Montreal when he was 13. His friend signed him up for his first show, and the audience loved his performance so Green was asked to come back the next day.
Shortly afterwards, he returned to Canada settling in Niagara Falls.
Green started his own monthly talk show this year, Live on Queen with David Green, filmed at Taps Brewery in Niagara Falls. It is open to the public. All shows are recorded, posted on YouTube, and advertised on his Facebook page, facebook.com/liveonqueenwithdavidgreen.
Green began hosting comedy shows in 2008 when he and his friend, Ben Wilson, started the Gallery Pump Comedy contest shows in Hamilton, and he’s been hosting shows across the Niagara Region ever since.
He says he loves hosting shows because it gives him more stage time, and it helps him learn how to communicate with an audience.
In August, Green released his first solo comedy CD, Mangos Bananas. He gives credit to his friend and co-worker, Jeffery Stroop, for coming up with the idea. Green has been part of a compilation CD in the past, but wanted to make his own. He donated all the proceeds to the children’s unit at the St. Catharines General Hospital.
He said they need the money more than he does, and he is happy to help out.
Green has assisted with many other fundraisers, and still does. He tries to help at least one charity per year.
Stroop met Green in 2008 at an open mic comedy show. They’ve grown closer as friends during the many stand-up shows they performed together.
“Being around David is great,” asserted Stroop. “He is a very positive person that wants everyone around him to do well.”
Stroop says he highly regards not only Green’s contributions to the region’s comedy scene, but also his ability to inspire others.
“If there is one thing he has taught me, it would be to not hold back or be afraid to try anything when it comes to my comedy, and I like how much David has done to make Niagara a great place to do comedy.”
Green had appearances on Rogers TV in 2012 and 2013, and has been in many competitions. He has won a few, including funniest comic at Comedy at Club 54, but jokingly admits he comes in “second a lot.”
Besides comedy, Green enjoys hiking the Niagara Gorge, stopping to snap some photos or squeeze in the occasional outdoor nap under a shady tree to escape the warm glow of the sun.
When first thinking of taking the plunge into stand-up, Green was greatly inspired by other comedians, and his all-time hero is Mitch Hedburg. He lists Brian Reegan, Jim Gaffigan and Clifford Myers as some of his other favourites.
He also gets his motivation from funny TV shows and says it’d be “cool” to write and act in a show one day.
Green finds himself befriending and working with a lot of other funny people.
Levi Mann met Green in 2011 at the House of Comedy when Mann performed comedy for the first time, and the duo has since become “best buddies” and co-workers – they have collaborated in many ways over the years.
“It feels inspiring to be around him because he is doing the type of work I aspire to,” says Mann.
He adds that his favourite thing about Green is his contagious humour.
“When anyone hangs out with David long enough they, too, start making silly puns and twisting words.”
Green encourages anyone to get into comedy if they’re interested, and shared the super secret techniques needed to begin.
“Just do it and keep doing it.”
He admitted it will be hard to get started, and you will be scared; however, if give yourself a deadline of when you will perform, and stick to it, you can succeed.
“If you are meant to do it, you will enjoy it.”
