The Niagara News is the community newspaper of Niagara College located in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. It is created and produced by the students of the Niagara College Journalism program.
The Shack, the student cafe at Welland campus, is giving a free small hot beverage on loosing Roll up the Rim to Win tabs from Tim Hortons. This offer will be available at the Shack until March 9.
That hot beverage includes coffee, tea or a hot chocolate in a 10-ounce cup.
“Last year was our first year we did this. This year being our second year, we are twice as busy as we usually are,” says, Shelagh Clarke, Shack supervisor.
Clarke says, if you think double the people are here, we are making nothing out of them being here so, we are paying for half of the things we are selling today.
“It’s all about raising awareness about the Shack that yes, we are here and we are doing something for students,” says Jessica Easterbrook, an employee at the Shack and a second-year Nursing student at Niagara College.
“Doing something like this, obviously we make zero profit off anything if we lose a bunch, but it’s just showing that we care about you so come and see us,” says Easterbrook.
The Shack has some funds saved out of other things in order to balance the loss that they incur giving out free coffee.
“We hope to make it back up in gaining new customers, customers who have never visited us before, who strictly go to Tim Hortons. They may come here and try our coffee and a lot of times customers realize that our coffee is way better,” says Clarke.
According to Clarke, some students don’t know that the Shack is run by the Student Administrative Council.
“When they go to Tim’s and lose they come here and win,” says Clarke.
