Affecting school grades, relationships and jobs; boys and men are hooked on pornography.
Porn is hijacking our brains that are, says Discover magazine, more visually responsive than women’s. Many magazines and recent research tell us that porn is turning the male population into slow witted, aggressive and limp addicts.
In his ebook the Demise of Guys, Philip Zimbardo, the infamous psychologist behind the Stanford prison experiment, states, “Boys are less likely to get BA’s [bachelor of arts] and graduate degrees, guys make up two-thirds of special ed students, are five times more likely to have ADHD and in Canada five boys drop out for every three girls.”
The problem, says Zimbardo, is boys’ brains are being changed by the video games and Internet porn that consumes their lives. Their brains “are being digitally rewired for novelty, excitement and constant arousal.”
Boys can’t learn well in the classes of today which don’t change at the click of a mouse and aren’t for the most part interactive.
Males are struggling in society too.
According to a Psychology Today article, men are losing the ability to find their partner sexually attractive, and more frequently have difficulty developing and maintaining an erection. The trouble isn’t between their legs, but between their ears.
In my view, the problem lies in the brain’s limbic system and its main neurochemical transmitter, dopamine, the means by which the brain transmits signals from a neuron to a cell.
Dopamine is the neurochemical that makes you crave something. The more dopamine your brain releases the more you will crave. Activities ranging from eating to taking risks will increase dopamine.
Dr. Norman Doidge a Toronto psychiatrist says dopamine is very responsive to the new and unexpected. That’s why couples need constant novelty to keep their relationships interesting. However, rather than being spontaneous and working hard at a relationship, a man’s brain can get its fix from the unending novelty of Internet porn.
With the click of a mouse, an Internet user sees a different woman, a different body part, a different sexual activity or any number of different fetishes. With each click things change and the user receives another shot of dopamine. How could any woman compete with that?
Coupled with dopamine, a desire for unending novelty affects libido with the help of the Coolidge Effect, a phenomenon witnessed in nearly every mammal. Males, and to a smaller extent females, will show a renewed sexual interest if introduced to a new and willing sex partner, even after they’ve turned down a previous partner.
Gary Wilson, host of yourbrainonporn.com says in his TED x talk, The Great Porn Experiment, that “without the Coolidge Effect there would be no Internet porn, [it] perceives each novel female on screen as a genetic opportunity. … As long as the guy can keep clicking, he can keep going and so can his dopamine.”
Porn seems to have a partner in crime, ΔFos B (pronounced delta Fos B.) ΔFos B is a protein that accumulates in the neurons of drug users. Each time a drug is used ΔFos B builds, until a genetic switch is thrown, causing a user to need less of a substance before he craves it.
Dopamine, the Coolidge Effect and ΔFos B all played a role in Doidge’s practice. In his book The Brain That Changes Itself, Doidge talks about patients he treated in the 1990s, who had porn addictions. He says the men had developed a taste for porn that troubled them and had an extremely negative impact on their ability to become aroused.
“Instead of using their senses to enjoy being in bed in the present with their partners, lovemaking increasingly required them to fantasize that they were part of a porn script.”
Some of Doidge’s patients tried to get their partners to act like porn stars and were frequently more interested in aggressive sex versus lovemaking.
Internet porn’s impact on guys seems difficult to scientifically study. Simon Lajeunesse a PhD from the University of Montreal, says, “Most boys seek pornography by age 10 [and] guys who do not watch pornography do not exist.” Without a control group it is hard to determine what is normal, and what is a consequence of watching porn.
Wilson puts it well in The Great Porn Experiment. “Imagine if all guys started smoking at age 10 and there were no groups that didn’t, we would think that lung cancer is normal for all guys.”
There is a glimmer of hope for the scientific community. A number of online blogs and forums have popped up facilitating discussion on getting off porn. Online groups, such as Fapstronauts, encourage men to abstain from watching porn or masturbating for different lengths of time. Groups such as these will eventually provide the closest thing we have to a control group.
