The Greatest Showman was a masterpiece from start to finish. The music was extraordinary, the setting was beautiful, the costumes were unique and the message was inspiring.
The movie was based on the true story of P. T. Barnum, who had a long road to success with his circus, which he began in 1870.
Barnum didn’t come from money, and this was shown through scenes of him taking care of his father and trying to steal a loaf of bread in tattered clothing. His love interest was Charity, the daughter of a wealthy family.
Even though her father told Barnum to stay away, it didn’t stop them from writing letters to each other while she was at finishing school.
Love truly conquered all because Charity decided to run off with Barnum and they later got married, bought a house in New York City and raised their two daughters together.
They didn’t have much, but they had each other and that was enough.
Then Barnum lost his job and was inspired to open a museum, which eventually turned into his circus: The Greatest Show.
When Barnum first opened the museum, no one was interested in buying tickets to see his display, but he refused to give up.
He advertised heavily and recruited unusual people to perform at his venue and it was a huge success.
He shared a special bond with the performers, who were his second family. They motivated him to pick up the pieces and start over when his dreams literally went up in flames.
This ultimately forced him to rebuild with better values, choosing the family he built after he first abandoned them.
He bought a piece of land and a tent, using his business partner Philip Carlyle’s money, and Barnum’s Circus is reborn once more.
They decided to split the profits 50/50 and Barnum handed the reigns over to Carlyle, electing to move on to spend time with his family.
The movie showed his struggles and successes with the show and taught us valuable life lessons along the way.
Barnum went from rags to riches because he had a dream and he made it come true.
This taught the audience that you can reach your goals with commitment and hard work.
The main message being that family is everything. Barnum wanted to give his children the life he never had, and his hard work paid off when they moved into their mansion and got everything they’ve ever wanted.
Filming took place in New York, and the set was breath taking.
The old historic buildings mirrored the historical time period.
The movie was released in Canada on Dec. 20, 2017. It brought in a whopping $194.7 million at the box office: the budget for the movie was $84 million.
Reviews from the audiences were promising, as 90 per cent of the viewers on Rotten Tomatoes said they “liked” The Greatest Showman.
