Every year people in the community go hungry, students can’t afford groceries and it’s a struggle to make a meal.
To kick off the new school year, SAC from both campuses collected canned goods and other non-perishable items during the week leading up to Oct. 28.
SAC representatives, along with the SAC team of volunteers from both campuses, handed out Halloween-themed tags and bags door-to-door on Oct. 25.
Samantha Roth, 19, director of campaigns at the Welland campus, says members of SAC distribute the bags "to home communities." She says the bags will then be picked up on Oct. 28.
Amy Cain, director of campaigns at the NOTL campus, says she has a team "of approximately 15 SAC volunteers" who helped with the distribution around the NOTL area. She says both campuses work separately but it’s for the same cause.
Every year SAC unites for a food drive. Last year’s theme, "I’d rather go naked than hungry," had people all around the college checking out the posters and becoming aware of the need for food.
This year’s campaign is ideally going to start at the end of November. No theme has been finalized, but SAC is hard at work to make it the best yet.
Kimberly Smith, 21, director of media, says she is "really excited for the food drive within the school community because it will give everyone a chance to come together and really help each other out."
"The student food bank in the SAC office is a great resource, and I’m worried that students don’t realize they can access it at any time. Everyone needs a little help from time to time."
Students in need of groceries this winter season are encouraged to visit the SAC food bank. Each campus has one in the SAC office. Use of it is anonymous.
