The Centre for Leadership and Engagement is putting together a Get Involved week starting Wednesday.
Every day, until Oct. 8, students will have the opportunity to learn about volunteer opportunities on and off campus from a long list of participants.
Lesley Calvin, manager of Student Engagement and Leadership, says working with the various departments has been “fabulous.”
“We want to look at a way to let the student body know, pretty early in the school year, about all the opportunities that are available to them,” said Calvin.
A variety of guest speakers will be present during the week. The college will offer a “special treat this year,” hosting speakers from the Me to We Foundation at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus.
Craig Kielburger spoke here last year and the foundation organizers enjoyed the experience so much they reached out to the college to see if they could come back as part of their Year of Empowerment tour.
The session will be in the Yerich Auditorium and is free for all students. It will show the impact volunteering can have in the world.
This is the first year for the Get Involved week. Until now the Centre for Leadership and Student Engagement held just the volunteer fair at both campuses.
Jane McTavish, social media co-ordinator for the Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership, said it is going to be a lot of fun for students. “It’s going to be very interactive.”
Since the centre’s launch in 2012 Calvin said she has seen a huge increase in volunteer opportunities for students and those willing to volunteer after learning about the many ways to do so.
Students will be able to learn about the International Department, Sustainability, the Respect Campaign, Peer Mentoring, Library services, Student Administrative Council, the Student Leadership program, the Centre for Student Leadership and Engagement, the Get Involved co-curricular program, Athletics and Recreation, Niagara Research and Leave the Pack Behind during the weeklong activities.
