Run for your life! Zombies are taking over the world! Figuratively … of course. Zombies have become the hot new trend in today’s popular culture.
The term zombie is used to describe the mindless, reanimated corpses with a hunger for human flesh, and, in some instances for human brains. One bite or scratch from a zombie infects the victim causing them to die and rise once again as the living dead.
The actual origin of the name zombie is unclear. It holds similarities to the Haitian Vodun or Voodoo, in which spells and curses were used to raise the dead to be something like a slave or minion. It has also been seen in ancient folklore throughout history, but again the term has no official origin for today’s popular zombie culture.
Zombies made their big debut and first major screen appearance in George A. Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. Romero crossed the zombie with the vampire to get what he saw as a hybrid of a ghoulish plague monster.
The idea swept the horror nation.
Isaac Cunningham, longtime zombie/ horror fan, says he believes Romero and Max Brooks have influenced the zombie culture the most.
“George A. Romero is one of the biggest zombie influences out there due to all his films. And then there is the author of Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, Max Brooks, who has also had a huge impact on the already growing zombie fan base,” says Cunningham.
Since their appearance in the film industry, zombies have been popping up all over in today’s entertainment. They are seen in literature, comic books and graphic novels, gaming, music, art and most recently in television programing.
Next to film, video games are the second largest fan base for zombies. With such big titles such as the Left for Dead series, Lollipop Chainsaw, Resident Evil, Call of Duty: Zombies, and the very fun and popular spoof game Plants versus Zombies, the possibilities for zombie survival-type games are endless.
Paul Tappay, owner of Pulp Comics Niagara Falls, says the zombie horror fiction has definitely been rising in the past few years.
“The Walking Dead comic series, based on surviving a zombie apocalypse, is definitely one of my (as well as a good number of comic book fans), favourite independent comic series. The first thing I do when it comes into my shop is read the latest issue. It’s just very well done, very realistic,” says Tappay.
The Walking Dead, written by Robert Kirkman, has become a huge hit in the comic book industry, so much so, that it has been turned into a gripping new television show. Season three of the show had just launch in October as one of the highest watched shows on TV Most people believe it is due to it being the very first zombie-related television series.
The idea of becoming a zombie has always spiked people’s curiosity, even outside the entertainment world.
James Takeo, a local tattoo artist and organizer of the latest Zombie Walk in Welland, says he has always been a zombie fanatic.
“I’ve always found zombies fascinating. It’s the curiosity and dread of what happens after we die, the fear of this unknown. I find zombies interesting because they are not like other monsters of movie and folklore. Only a few can become vampires, werewolves, or serial killers. Anyone can be a zombie.”
The fear that zombies can be a possibility has driven people to create their own plans in case of a zombie apocalypse. This fantastical organization has found its way to the U.S. Center for Disease Control. It has created a zombie survival guide on its website for everyone to check out and prepare for.
“I think zombies are big in popular culture these days as it has much to do with many modern fears. News reports about bath salts, body parts being mailed, diseases and pandemics, these are all fears we have put in our from news media,” says Takeo.
He believes that society may not need to be bitten by one of these monsters in order to become one. It would almost appear that we are slowly turning ourselves into them.
“We are also starting to feel alienated from each other in a physical sense. It seems the only way people connect any more is through smartphones and social media. You can watch people today walking along staring into their cellphones and you may see many zombies walking the streets.”
Zombies are one of the top horror icons as well as one of the most entertaining. The idea of rising after death will always be a fantastical idea in the back of our minds, but with so much hype surrounding the zombie culture, are we as a society becoming too desensitized to such a horrifying possibility?
Realistically, how would today’s society react if a zombie appeared to be walking or running towards you?
Whether you’re playing a game, reading a book, or watching a movie, the biggest question on everybody’s mind when it comes to zombies is: Do you have what it takes to survive?
Да это самого черта собьет с толку.
